Perform a Bucket Test
How To Do A Bucket Test to See If You Have a Leak
- Use a 5 gallon bucket

- Fill it with pool water about 3 inches from the top.
- Set it in the water on the second step in the pool. (We want temperature and weather conditions to be the same for the bucket and the pool.)
- Mark the water level inside the bucket with a crayon or piece of tape.
- On the outside of the bucket mark the pool water level the same way.
- After 24 hours if the pool level has went down more from its mark than the bucket level did from its mark you have a leak.
Tips
- We like to tie the bucket to a hand rail or something so it doesn’t get knocked over or into the pool.
- If you need to weigh the bucket down let the brick or whatever you use absorb the water before marking the bucket.
- The water levels do not have to be the same. We need to see if the pool goes down more from its mark than the bucket does from its mark.( The bucket will only evaporate.)
- We suggest running this test with the pump off for 24 hrs and then for 24 hrs with the pump on. Write down the results! This helps us to narrow down were the leak might be and can save you money if you need us to find it.
- Don’t add water or backwash the filter during the test. Its best not to allow swimming during this time. And don’t let the dog drink out of the bucket.
- If it rains the pool and the bucket should go up the same amount. If the bucket goes up more than the pool the pool is leaking.
